State Requirements for Drivers/Registration

Driver’s License
You must apply for a California driver license within 10 days of establishing residency.

California DOES NOT recognize International Driving Permits. However, as a visitor you may drive with your local State or Country Driver’s License.

To apply for an original diver license if you are over 18 you will need to do the following:

Visit a DMV office (make an appointment for faster service)
Submit an original form DL44
Give a thumb print and have your picture taken
Provide your social security number
Provide your true full name and verify your birth date and legal presence
Pass a vision exam
Pas s a traffic laws and sign test

If you have a license from another coun try, you will be required to take a driving test. If you have a license from another state, the driving test may be waived

To apply for a provisional permit if you are under 18 you will need to do the following:

Be at least 15 _ , but under 18 years of age
Submit an original form DL44
Give a thumb print and have your picture taken
Provide your social security number
Provide your true full name and verify your birth date and legal presence
Submit the proper forms for diver education and/or driver training classes
Pass a vision exam
Pass a traffic laws and sign test – you must be at least 16 years old

PLEASE CHECK WITH THE DMV FOR OTHER RESTRICTIONS/REQUIREMENTS

Under 18 Provisional Driver License
Restrictions during the first year:
You must be accompanied and supervised by a licensed parent, guardian or other licensed driver 25 years of age or older or a licensed or certified driving instructor when you:
Transport passengers under 20 years of age at any time, for the first six months.
Drive between midnight and 5AM for the first 12 months.
Persons under 18 may not be employed to drive a motor vehicle

Minimum Insurance Requirements
California requires that drivers and vehicle owners carry the following minimum monetary limits:
$15,000 for injury or death of 1 person per accident.
$30,000 for injury or death of 2 or more persons per accident.
$5,000 for property damage per accident.
Evidence of financial responsibility must be carried at all times in the vehicle.

Reporting an accident to DMV
Required if there is property damage of more than $750 or if any one was injured (no matter how minor) or killed. Each driver must make a report to DMV within 10 days, whether you caused the accident or not. You must complete DMV Traffic Accident Report form SR 1/SR 1A.

Automobile Registration
All automobiles in the State of California must be registered with the SMV within 20 days and have a valid California Smog Certification. The registration fee depends on the make and year of the car.

Smog Certification
Smog inspections are required fro all vehicles except diesel powered vehicles, electric, natural gas powered vehicles over 14,000 lbs, hybrids, motorcycles, trailers, or vehicles 1975 and older. You are required to submit evidence of smog certification every other renewal periods. Vehicles six or less model years old will pay an annual smog abatement fee for the first six registration years. If at registration renewal a smog certification is required and you have not had a smog inspection, you may still pay your registration fees to avoid any late fees.
